Gard rhodanien placed under red alert for severe wildfire risk

The Gard rhodanien region in France has been placed under a red alert for wildfire risk for Thursday, September 3, 2026. State services issued the warning due to extremely unfavorable meteorological conditions, including high temperatures, heatwaves, and a lack of precipitation that has severely dried out vegetation.

The red alert status imposes strict restrictions, including a total ban on human presence, circulation, and access to affected forests, heaths, and scrublands. Additionally, any work capable of producing heat or sparks is prohibited. Authorities have reminded the public that the use of fire—including cigarettes, barbecues, and fireworks—is strictly forbidden in wooded areas and within a 200-meter radius of such sectors between June 15 and September 15.

Legal consequences for causing fires, whether intentional or unintentional, are being strictly enforced. In cases of unintentional fires that cause bodily harm or irreversible environmental damage, individuals may face up to three years of imprisonment and a fine of 45,000 euros.
