Wildfire activity and risk in France

In mid-August 2026, multiple wildfires were reported across various French regions. In the Rhône department, a fire near Vaugneray consumed approximately 5,000 square meters of vegetation, requiring 38 firefighters and two water-bombing helicopters. Simultaneously, a significant forest fire in the Lozère department burned over 150 hectares in the commune of Prévenchères, prompting a large-scale response involving 130 firefighters and several aircraft.

By early September, the situation evolved from active fires to heightened preventative measures due to extreme weather. The Gard rhodanien region was placed under a red alert for wildfire risk caused by high temperatures and a lack of precipitation. This alert status implemented strict restrictions, including a total ban on human presence and access to forests, as well as prohibitions on any work capable of producing sparks. Authorities also emphasized legal consequences for causing fires, noting that unintentional fires causing harm could result in up to three years of imprisonment.
