Garden Oaks Theater preservation deadline extended in Houston

Arthouse Houston, a nonprofit dedicated to saving historic cinemas, secured a final extension on the purchase deadline for the 1947 Art Deco Garden Oaks Theater at 3732 North Shepherd. The new deadline pushes the closing date to the end of August, giving the group an additional window to raise the roughly $1.6 million still needed for the down‑payment, closing costs and carrying expenses required to acquire the property.

To date, more than $1.8 million has been raised toward the $7.1 million purchase price from the developer Heights Investment Fund. The effort has drawn support from local filmmakers—including Houston‑born director Wes Anderson—philanthropists, preservationists and community members. Arthouse Houston co‑founder and director Maureen McNamara said the extension provides “one last opportunity to secure the commitments needed to save the Garden Oaks Theater” and turn it into a vibrant arts and film center. The property’s current owners, Heights Equity Trust and Sage Equity Partners, had planned to demolish the theater and redevelop the site.
