Garden Oaks Theater preservation

In mid‑July 2026 director Wes Anderson returned to Houston for a high‑profile fundraiser at the Hobby Center’s Zilkha Hall. About 500 attendees—including filmmakers, preservationists, philanthropists and movie fans—helped launch a three‑year capital campaign to save the historic 1947 Art Deco Garden Oaks Theater, which was slated for demolition. The city proclaimed July 17 “Wes Anderson Day,” highlighting Texas film tax credits and the Houston Film Commission’s support for local productions.

By the end of July, Arthouse Houston secured a final extension on the theater’s purchase deadline, moving the closing date to the end of August. The nonprofit now has an additional window to raise the estimated $1.6 million needed for the down‑payment, closing costs and carrying expenses. To date, more than $1.8 million has been raised toward the $7.1 million purchase price, with ongoing support from local filmmakers, philanthropists and community members. The extension is described as “one last opportunity” to acquire the property and convert it into a vibrant arts and film center before the owners proceed with demolition plans.
