Garden pest control: homemade tricks to deter ants and snails

Home gardeners in German‑speaking regions are using simple household remedies to protect lawns and vegetable beds from common pests. The Agriculture Chamber of North Rhine‑Westphalia advises catching yellow meadow ants (Lasius flavus) in jars filled with jam or sugar syrup, then relocating the jars to compost or disposing of the nests. Additional ant‑repellent methods include a turned‑over flower pot over the nest or applying a wermut (wormwood) decoction to the hills.

For snail management, a German vegetable grower recommends planting sacrificial crops such as spinach, lettuce, carrots or kale to lure the pests away from valuable produce. He also uses a moist wooden board to gather snails, which are then transferred to a poultry enclosure for natural predation.
