Gardening advice for autumn plant care and hydrangea pruning

Autumn gardening requires specific care strategies depending on the plant species. For hydrangeas, pruning decisions must be based on whether the variety blooms on new wood or old wood. Varieties that bloom on new wood can be pruned in autumn or winter without affecting next year's flowers. However, those that bloom on old wood, such as Hydrangea macrophylla, Hydrangea serrata, Hydrangea quercifolia, and Hydrangea petiolaris, should not be pruned in the autumn, as this may remove the flower buds formed in the previous season.

To maintain garden aesthetics as summer fades, selecting late-blooming species is recommended. Plants such as chrysanthemums, autumn anemones, late dahlias, pansies, and asters can provide color and texture during cooler months. Successful autumn landscaping relies on a combination of flowering species, decorative foliage, ornamental grasses, and shrubs that offer resistance to frost and varying heights to create a vibrant outdoor space.
