Gardening advice: How to support birds and wildlife this autumn
Gardeners are encouraged to limit autumn cleanup activities to support local wildlife, particularly birds and beneficial insects. Reducing the removal of branches and leaves provides natural protection from predators and maintains habitats for insects that birds feed on.
To attract birds, it is recommended to plant fruit-bearing shrubs such as hawthorn, rosehip, viburnum, or barberry. When feeding birds during the first frosts, experts suggest using unsalted sunflower seeds, nuts, or fat balls, while strictly avoiding bread. Providing fresh water is also essential.
Additionally, not all perennials should be cut back in the fall. Leaving dried stems and leaves can protect developing buds from frost and wind. Certain plants, such as yarrow, bergenia, thistles, and ornamental grasses, retain decorative value throughout the winter and serve as vital food sources for birds.
