Gardening experts recommend September planting for spring flowers and vegetables

September is identified by gardening experts as an ideal time to prepare for future seasons by planting specific flowers and vegetables.

To ensure a vibrant spring display, gardening expert Craig Wilson recommends planting daffodil bulbs between September and November. For best results, bulbs should be planted approximately 15cm deep in well-draining soil, with a spacing of 7.5–10cm when planted directly in the ground. If using containers, bulbs can be placed closer together, roughly 2.5–5cm apart, provided the pots have adequate drainage.

For edible gardening, Nick Walker of Florette suggests that September is a productive time for sowing leafy greens and root vegetables. Recommended crops include rocket, kale, winter lettuce, spinach, and Swiss chard, which can provide a steady supply of nutrients through the cooler months. Additionally, fast-growing options like radishes can be sown directly into loose, well-draining soil for a harvest within a few weeks.
