Autumn gardening tips for bulb planting and plant care

As autumn progresses, gardeners are advised to adopt specific maintenance strategies to prepare for winter. For tulip bulbs, experts suggest waiting until the soil temperature approaches 10°C to ensure proper root development and avoid disease from overly warm, moist soil.

Pruning practices should be selective to protect local ecosystems. While diseased or dead wood should be removed to prevent fungal spread, leaving certain dried stems and foliage can provide essential shelter for pollinators and birds. Specific plants, such as hydrangeas, roses, and lavender, should not be heavily pruned before the first frost to avoid damaging new growth or buds.

Other seasonal tasks include planting spring bulbs like tulips and daffodils, protecting sensitive plants from upcoming frosts, and refreshing container gardens with hardy plants or bulbs. Additionally, autumn herbs like sage and rosemary can be harvested to create homemade medicinal balms using oil and beeswax.
