Gardening guide for autumn shrub pruning

Autumn is an appropriate time for targeted maintenance of certain shrubs, such as removing dead wood and thinning out overly dense plants. Species like privet, hazelnut, and honeysuckle are suitable for this type of care.

However, gardeners should exercise caution with summer bloomers and spring bloomers. While summer bloomers like butterfly bush can tolerate pruning, spring bloomers such as witch hazel or magnolia should not be cut heavily in autumn, as this may remove the buds required for next year's flowers.

Before pruning, it is important to check for nesting birds or habitats for animals like hedgehogs. Pruning should ideally be performed on dry, frost-free days.
