Gardening guide for October plant pruning and care

October provides a specific window for light gardening tasks, though experts warn against performing heavy winter pruning too early. Proper timing is essential to prevent plant damage that may only become apparent in the following season.

Recommended tasks for October include tidying up faded perennial ornamental plants such as geraniums, hydrangeas, roses, and jasmine by removing dry or excessively vigorous growth. Evergreen hedges like privet and photinia can also be tidied during this month, as cooler temperatures and higher soil moisture reduce the risk of sun scorch compared to summer pruning. Perennial herbs like lavender, sage, and thyme benefit from light pruning to maintain shape, provided cuts do not go too deeply into woody stems.

Specific fruit and garden plants require targeted care: autumn raspberries should have fruiting stems cut low to the ground, while blackberries benefit from removing old, two-year-old canes. Blackcurrants and gooseberries require sanitary pruning to remove diseased or broken branches. Additionally, herbaceous peonies can be cut back after the first strong frosts to help the plant transfer energy to its roots for future growth.

Conversely, gardeners are cautioned against heavy pruning of roses before winter, as new growth and fresh wounds can increase the risk of frost damage and weaken the plant.
