Gardening experts share tips for planting spring bulbs and hydrangeas
As autumn approaches, gardening experts recommend various preparations for spring flowering plants, particularly bulbs like lilies, daffodils, and hydrangeas.
For daffodils, September is an ideal time for planting to allow for root development before winter. Experts suggest planting them in sunny or partially shaded spots with well-draining soil, ideally at a depth two to three times the height of the bulb. Varieties such as Narcissus ‘Tête-à-tête’ are noted for being low-maintenance and reliable. However, if the ground remains hard from summer heat, it may be better to wait for rain to soften the soil before planting in the ground, though pots can be planted earlier since they can be watered manually.
Lilies benefit from September and early October care, including planting or transplanting bulbs and applying phosphorus and potassium rather than nitrogen. Proper drainage is essential to prevent bulb rot. For hydrangea macrophylla, pruning techniques can influence bloom size: cutting higher promotes more flowers on a larger bush, while cutting lower results in fewer but larger blooms. Pruning is best performed in late winter or early spring.
