Gardening strategies for fall preparation and spring growth

Autumn provides a strategic window for gardeners to prepare outdoor spaces for the upcoming winter and ensure successful growth in the spring. Key tasks include lawn maintenance, such as applying fertilizer in September to strengthen grass and reseeding bare patches during mid-September to take advantage of cool, damp weather.

For plant preservation, gardeners are advised to dig up tender summer bulbs like Dahlias and Begonias in September to dry and store them. Tropical patio plants should be brought indoors and inspected for pests as temperatures drop. Additionally, those hosting Mason Bees should clean their houses with a mild bleach solution and store cocoons in a cool, dry place by October.

Fall is also an ideal time for planting bulbs, perennials, and shrubs. Because the soil remains warm while air temperatures cool, roots can establish themselves before the ground freezes.
