Gardening tasks and hedge pruning regulations for October

October marks a transition period for gardening, involving both seasonal maintenance and legal considerations for plant care.

Under the German Federal Nature Conservation Act, the protection period for hedges, shrubs, and other woody plants ends on October 1. This allows for more intensive pruning and cutting back, which is prohibited between March 1 and September 30 to protect wildlife. However, gardeners are advised to check for nesting animals before proceeding to ensure species protection is maintained.

Additionally, October is an ideal time for planting robust woody plants, trees, shrubs, and roses, as the soil remains sufficiently warm. It is also a period for planting flower bulbs and preparing sensitive plants for the winter months while continuing the harvest of fruits and vegetables.
