Gardening tips for autumn bulb planting

Successful autumn bulb planting, particularly for tulips and onions, requires specific techniques to ensure healthy growth and large heads in the spring. For tulips, using cardboard egg cartons can serve as a practical tool to maintain even spacing between bulbs during planting. This method involves placing the cartons in a trench 12 to 15 centimeters deep, placing one bulb in each compartment, and covering them with soil. The cardboard is biodegradable and will decompose in the ground.

For onion planting, experts recommend selecting smaller seed bulbs, ideally between 8 and 14 mm in diameter, to prevent the plants from producing flower stalks instead of large bulbs. It is also critical to wait until the soil temperature drops to approximately 5 to 7 degrees Celsius, typically between October and early November, to avoid premature growth that could be damaged by frost.
