Gardening tips for autumn flowers and winter plant preservation

Gardeners can maintain vibrant landscapes during the transition to winter by utilizing specific perennial varieties and proper preservation techniques for sensitive plants.

To extend seasonal color, gypsophila, Japanese anemone, and tricyrtis are recommended for autumn displays. Gypsophila thrives in sun, Japanese anemone prefers partial shade, and tricyrtis grows well in light shade. These perennials can provide structure and color until the first frosts.

For protecting fuchsias from frost damage, three primary strategies are suggested: dry dormancy, greenhouse or veranda storage, and taking cuttings as insurance. When using the dry dormancy method, heavy pruning is recommended to save space and reduce disease risk. It is critical to avoid overwatering and excessive heat during winter storage, as these conditions can encourage pests and disease. Gardeners should also verify the hardiness of specific cultivars before attempting to leave them in the ground.
