Gardening tips for autumn lavender and hydrangea care

Autumn gardening requires specific care for plants like lavender and hydrangeas to ensure health and future blooms.

Lavender often yellows in the autumn due to increased moisture and soil acidification in pots. Because lavender prefers sunny, dry, alkaline, and well-ventilated soil, the combination of slower evaporation and compacted soil can damage roots. Harvesting lavender during this time allows for the creation of fragrant indoor decorations that last through the winter.

For hydrangeas, improper autumn pruning can prevent flowering in the following year. Varieties such as the bigleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) bloom on older wood where flower buds are already formed. Excessive pruning in autumn may remove these buds. It is recommended to leave dried flower heads intact as they can provide some protection to developing buds, and heavy pruning should be reserved for spring.
