Gardening tips for autumn planting and plant care

Autumn provides an ideal window for planting various shrubs to ensure spring blooms, provided the soil is neither frozen nor waterlogged. Recommended varieties include Forsythia, which offers bright yellow flowers and frost resistance, and Japanese Quince, known for red, pink, or white blossoms and suitability for smaller gardens.

Other suitable shrubs include Viburnum, specifically Viburnum bodnantense for its fragrant pink flowers, and Spiraea, such as Spiraea cinerea, which produces abundant white flowers in sunny or semi-shaded locations.

For indoor plants like the Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera), October is a critical month for encouraging flower buds. To trigger blooming, the plant requires a cooler rest period of approximately 12–15 °C, reduced watering, and long periods of uninterrupted darkness—ideally 12 hours of total darkness per night. Avoiding excessive heat and artificial light during the night is essential to prevent bud loss.
