Gardening tips for extended autumn blooms

Gardens can maintain color and texture into the autumn by planting cool-weather perennials. These plants provide visual interest as summer fades and support pollinators that remain active during the cooler months. Selecting varieties adapted to local conditions and frost tolerance helps reduce the need for seasonal replanting.

Fall-flowering crocuses, such as Colchicum or Crocus zonatus, are notable autumn options. These perennials emerge with leaves in the spring to gather nutrients before going dormant until late summer or early autumn, when they bloom. They are generally resistant to deer and squirrels.

Additionally, Crocus sativus, known as the Saffron Crocus, can be grown in gardens. The plant produces mauve blooms in the fall, and its stigmas are used to produce the spice saffron. For best results, these bulbs should be planted in early September in sunny, well-drained areas.
