Gardening tips for October: wintering vegetables and geraniums

As temperatures drop in October, gardeners can prepare for successful harvests and plant protection through specific seasonal techniques.

For container gardening, planting certain vegetables in October allows for a late spring or summer harvest. Recommended crops that can overwinter in pots include garlic, winter onion sets, shallots, and hardy broad beans. To prevent bulb rot caused by humidity and poor drainage, it is essential to use highly draining substrates and ensure pots have adequate depth. For example, the Royal Horticultural Society suggests that garlic pots should be at least 25cm deep.

Additionally, pelargoniums (commonly known as balcony geraniums) require preparation before the first frost. Since these plants cannot survive temperatures below 0°C, gardeners should take action once night temperatures fall below 5°C. Key steps include a thorough sanitary cleaning by removing faded flowers and yellow leaves to prevent gray mold (Botrytis cinerea), as well as severe pruning of the stems to ensure plant health during the winter months.
