Gardening tips for reviving plants after summer heat
Gardeners can revitalize their plants following summer heatwaves by using specific maintenance techniques. For repeat-blooming rose bushes, pruning during early September can trigger a second wave of flowers before the first frosts, provided the plant is healthy and well-watered.
To ensure successful regrowth, it is essential to use disinfected tools to prevent the spread of spores and to water the plants the day before pruning. Additionally, gardeners should use the ‘nail test’ to distinguish between dead plants and those in forced dormancy due to drought. By scratching the bark, a green layer underneath indicates the plant is still alive and capable of recovering once conditions improve, whereas dry, brown wood signifies permanent loss.
