Gardening tips for transitioning balconies from summer to autumn

As summer transitions into autumn, balcony gardeners can maintain vibrant displays by selecting specific plants and performing timely maintenance. To extend the colorful season, varieties such as asters, chrysanthemums, heathers, heucheras, and stonecrops are recommended. Asters, in particular, are noted for their ability to take over the balcony scene when summer flowers begin to fade, offering shades of purple, pink, blue, and white.

For existing plants like lavender, proper pruning is essential once the flowers lose their color and stems begin to dry. Pruning should be done with sharp tools on a dry day, ideally in the morning or late afternoon. To encourage regrowth and maintain a compact shape, gardeners should remove spent flower heads along with several centimeters of green, leafy stem, being careful to avoid the woody, grey parts of the plant which do not regenerate easily.
