Gas explosion injures eight at Barcelona's Plaça de Sants metro station

A gas pipe burst during accessibility works at the Plaça de Sants metro station in Barcelona caused a deflagration and a large fire on the night of 22 July 2026. The blast injured eight men – two seriously – who were taken to Hospital Vall d'Hebron and Hospital Clínic.

Barcelona firefighters deployed nine units along with eight ambulances, while civil protection activated the Procicat pre‑alert plan and the city blocked traffic around the station. The incident halted service on the L1 line between Florida and Plaça de Sants and prompted the use of alternative bus routes. Authorities are investigating the cause of the pipe rupture, which occurred in the afternoon, and are working to cut the gas flow before the flames can be fully extinguished.
