Barcelona Metro incidents July 2026

Overview

In late July 2026 Barcelona’s underground network faced two separate emergencies on Line 1. On 22 July a gas pipe burst during accessibility works at Plaça de Sants station, causing a deflagration that injured eight people and forced the closure of the L1 segment between Florida and Plaça de Sants. Firefighters, ambulances and civil‑protection units responded, traffic was blocked and alternative bus routes were deployed while investigators worked to stop the gas flow.

On 27 July a fire broke out in the catenary covering between Glòries and Clot stations. Dense smoke led to the evacuation of Glòries, the closure of Clot and the removal of a train from the affected stretch. The Ferrocat emergency plan was activated; the emergency number recorded 102 calls and 19 ambulances were dispatched. Between 120 and 137 passengers received treatment for smoke inhalation, 39 of whom were transferred to hospitals, none in critical condition. Service on Line 1 between Universitat and Sagrera stations was suspended, and part of Line 2 was also affected. Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona provided substitute bus services on routes H12, V25 and 192, and repairs and ventilation work were undertaken with an expectation to resume service the following Tuesday. Both incidents highlighted ongoing safety concerns and the challenges of disruption management in the city’s metro system.
