Gasmig launches Brazil's largest biometane procurement to boost Minas Gerais renewable energy

The Companhia de Gás de Minas Gerais (Gasmig), part of the Cemig Group, opened the biggest public tender for biometane in its history, seeking up to 250,000 cubic metres per day of renewable gas for delivery in the Triângulo Mineiro region. Proposals are accepted until 3 June 2026, with a ten‑year contract that could position Minas Gerais among the nation’s leading biometane hubs.

The programme aligns with Brazil’s “Future Fuel” law and a federal decree that mandates a minimum 1 % biometane share in natural‑gas consumption by 2026, rising to 10 % by 2034. It also introduces a “virtual pipeline” model, allowing producers to transport the gas by road before permanent pipelines are built.

Mila Corrêa da Costa, Minas Gerais’ Secretary of Economic Development, said the call “represents a strategic step to consolidate the state as a national reference in clean energy.” Cemig president Alexandre Ramos added that the initiative “transforms potential into investment, jobs and clean energy.” Gasmig president Gustavo De Marchi highlighted the environmental benefits, noting biometane can cut greenhouse‑gas emissions by up to 90 % compared with diesel.
