Gasmig of Minas Gerais launches Brazil's largest biometane procurement

The Companhia de Gás de Minas Gerais (Gasmig), part of the Cemig Group, opened the biggest public call for biometane in its history, seeking to contract up to 250,000 cubic metres per day of renewable gas for delivery to the Triângulo Mineiro region. Proposals can be submitted until 3 June 2026, and the contract will run for ten years.

The programme offers unprecedented logistical flexibility, allowing suppliers to use a virtual pipeline with road transport, enabling production to start before physical pipelines are built. If fully awarded, the volume could place Minas Gerais among Brazil's leading biometane hubs.

The initiative aligns with Brazil's Fuel of the Future Law (Law 14.993/2024) and Decree 12.614/2025, which require at least 1 % biometane in natural‑gas consumption by 2026, rising to 10 % by 2034. Gasmig president Gustavo De Marchi highlighted that biometane can cut greenhouse‑gas emissions by up to 90 % compared with diesel and supports regional economic development. The Triângulo Mineiro was chosen for its strong agro‑industrial activity and abundant organic waste suitable for biogas conversion.
