Spin Time building in Rome declared dangerous after fire, sparking eviction debate
A fire broke out on the night of 29‑30 July 2026 in the technical room of Spin Time Labs, an occupied cultural centre in Rome’s Esquilino district. Technical inspections by the Vigili del Fuoco declared the structure dangerous and temporarily uninhabitable. Around 400 residents – families, seniors and vulnerable people – were evacuated; many were left on the street and could only re‑enter one at a time, escorted by police, to retrieve medicines and essential items. No serious injuries or structural damage were reported, and the blaze was contained quickly.
The incident reignited a political dispute. Right‑wing politicians, including Fratelli d’Italia deputies Federico Rocca and Federico Mollicone and Lega leader Fabrizio Santori, called for the immediate eviction of the building, describing it as a “dangerous illegal occupation”. Centre‑left figures such as Mayor Roberto Gualtieri and local activists defended the occupants and demanded assistance and dignified housing solutions. The police, civil‑protection units and medical teams were present, and the Protezione Civile set up tents and distributed food and water to the displaced families.
