Fire incidents and safety concerns in Italy

In July 2024, a series of wildfires swept the Gargano peninsula in Puglia and parts of Molise. Authorities classified the blazes in Peschici and Campomarino as intentional arson, causing about €10 million in direct commercial losses and prompting evacuations of vulnerable facilities. Regional officials called for stronger prevention measures, including fire‑breaks, updated risk maps, and a dedicated fleet of Canadair aircraft.

Two days later, Italy faced a broader wave of fire‑related emergencies across urban areas. An electrical fault sparked a blaze at the Spin Time Labs social centre in Rome, while an LPG leak at a fuel depot in Acilia forced evacuations. A stairwell explosion in Fonte Nuova injured one resident, and a municipal building fire in Tuscania raised criticism over public communication. Additional incidents involved illegal diesel transport, a diesel spill reaching the sewer system, and several vehicle accidents in Calabria and other regions. These events highlighted ongoing safety, environmental, and emergency‑response challenges nationwide.
