Global fuel prices rise amid Middle East instability and refinery shortages
Global fuel prices are experiencing upward pressure due to instability in the Middle East and geopolitical tensions. In the United States, the national average for regular gasoline has reached approximately $4.10 per gallon, marking one of the highest levels recorded for this time of year. Diesel prices have also surged, nearing all-time records. Regional variations are significant, with California, Hawaii, and Washington seeing some of the highest costs, while states like Indiana and Texas report lower averages.
In Italy, motorists face a substantial financial burden, with estimates suggesting consumers will spend over €1 billion more on fuel this August compared to the previous year. Diesel prices on Italian motorways have reached historic highs, surpassing previous records set in early 2022.
Analysts attribute these rising costs to several factors, including crude oil prices remaining above $80 per barrel, uncertainty near the Strait of Hormuz, and the loss of Russian refinery capacity due to Ukrainian attacks. While some domestic gasoline demand has decreased seasonally, the volatility in global energy markets continues to drive pump prices higher.
