Overview

Global fuel and natural gas markets remain under severe pressure due to geopolitical disruptions and constrained refining capacity. Brent crude volatility persists, with oil prices fluctuating near $100 per barrel as regional instability complicates market modeling. In West Asia, the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) has warned that regional instability could cause “major energy security shocks” to global gas and LNG markets.

While oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz have largely returned to approximately 80% of pre-conflict levels, security risks in the Persian Gulf remain elevated. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has expanded operations beyond the Strait, targeting vessels in the wider region, including the Turkish-owned tanker Acers near Qatar. These maritime security risks have contributed to a massive surge in shipping costs; the daily charter rate for a supertanker traveling from the Persian Gulf to China has risen from approximately $65,000 last year to $1.6 million, while the cost to transport a single barrel of oil from the Persian Gulf has climbed to roughly $33.

The diesel and distillate market faces acute pressure. Russia has extended its ban on diesel exports until October 31, 2026, following drone attacks on several major refineries. Consequently, European diesel prices reached a historic high of $1,642.25 per tonne in September 2026. In the United States, distillate stocks have reached their lowest seasonal level since 1996, and average gasoline prices have reached $4.36 per gallon, the highest for this time of year.

These rising costs are exacerbated by ongoing conflicts, including Houthi attacks in the Red Sea and Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian refineries.
