Gautam Adani: US judge dismisses criminal fraud and bribery charges FAST-MOVING

A US federal judge has dismissed criminal charges against Indian billionaire Gautam Adani and his nephew, Sagar Adani, ending a major securities fraud and bribery case. The dismissal was granted following a request from the US Department of Justice to abandon the prosecution, which had alleged a scheme to bribe Indian officials for solar energy contracts.

US District Judge Nicholas Garaufis dismissed the charges with prejudice, meaning they cannot be refiled. While granting the request, the judge criticized the Justice Department's handling of the case, describing the decision-making process as “highly unusual” because it appeared to be made in collaboration with defense counsel without sufficient input from the FBI or SEC investigators.

The judge also addressed concerns regarding a potential quid pro quo, concluding that Adani's previous pledge to invest $10 billion in US energy projects did not influence the government's decision to drop the charges. Adani has consistently denied all wrongdoing, welcoming the ruling with “deep respect for the judicial process.”

While the case against the Adanis is closed, Judge Garaufis did not immediately dismiss charges against five other co-defendants, requesting further explanation from prosecutors regarding their intent to drop those specific counts.
