Gauteng Traffic Police chief Samuel Mashaba suspended amid cocaine scandal

Gauteng Traffic Police Chief Inspector Samuel Mashaba was placed on precautionary suspension by the Gauteng Provincial Government pending a formal disciplinary process. The suspension follows his testimony before the Madlanga Commission, where he admitted conduct that may breach the Public Service Code of Conduct, including the misuse of official powers, departmental tools and state resources, and acceptance of compensation from a private individual.

Mashaba is accused of stealing more than 715 kg of cocaine seized during a July 2021 drug bust at an Aeroton warehouse south of Johannesburg. The drugs had been hidden in legitimate cargo that arrived via Durban Harbour, and a substantial portion later disappeared from a police forensic laboratory. He, along with an informant and two police officers, was arrested by the Hawks and charged with defeating the ends of justice and drug dealing.

As part of the precautionary measures, Mashaba must surrender all tools of trade, including phones, firearms and laptops, and is barred from entering government buildings or interacting with staff to avoid interference with ongoing investigations. The provincial government reiterated its commitment to integrity, accountability and professionalism in public service.
