Global drug trafficking interdiction

Overview

July 2026 saw a wave of large‑scale seizures across West Africa and continued scrutiny of South Africa’s police corruption probe. In Senegal, authorities seized 245 kg of Indian hemp on Guéréo beach (10 July) and later intercepted 370 g of cocaine in Dalifort (15 July). The same week, Dakar police dismantled a network trafficking 390 kg of illicit medicines in the Grand Yoff market and broke up two separate cocaine‑related rings (15–19 July). Senegal’s anti‑drug units also uncovered a massive Kush operation in Diamniadio, seizing over 3 t of Kush (20 July). In August, security operations intensified. During the Grand Magal pilgrimage, Senegalese police arrested individuals for possessing Indian hemp and kush in Torokorobougou and Touba (1–2 August). In Dakar, the Regional Narcotics Brigade (BRS) seized 1.070 kg of cocaine and hashish from a suitcase with a false bottom (8–9 August), leading to three arrests. Between August 10 and 12, security forces dismantled a distribution network in the Dakar suburbs of Keur Massar and Grand Mbao, seizing 41 sachets of kush and 34 ecstasy tablets. This operation involved the Keur Massar Research Brigade and the National Gendarmerie’s Anti-Drug Fighting Group (GLAD), resulting in the arrest of a Senegalese individual and a foreign national. In Mbacké, a dispute between a woman and a client led police to seize 17 hashish tubes, 13 ‘volet’ tablets, and three crack stones (15 August). In Ghana, authorities have shifted focus toward disrupting financial networks. Following the interception of cocaine at Tema Harbour, the government announced the seizure of approximately GH¢6.9 million and US$440,000 in cash, along with 73 assets and 19 kg of gold linked to suspected money laundering. Between January 2025 and July 2026, Ghanaian agencies reported seizing over 8,500 kg of narcotics and 45.4 million tramadol tablets, resulting in 217 arrests.
