Gautrain secures 15-year concession and 800 million euro modernization
The Sihamba Sonke Mobility (SSM) consortium has secured a 15-year concession to operate South Africa’s Gautrain transit network starting in 2026. The agreement, reached through a public-private partnership with the Gautrain Management Agency, will run through 2041.
African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM) has reached financial close on the deal via its IDEAS Managed Fund. AIIM operates through a joint venture with Motseng Investment Holdings, which holds a 49% interest in the partnership, while the IDEAS Managed Fund holds 51%. The broader SSM consortium includes technical partners such as Alstom, RATP Dev, and GIBB-Crede.
As part of the modernization program, Alstom is set to lead an approximately 800 million euro initiative to upgrade the network. This overhaul includes implementing advanced digital signaling systems and the introduction of eight new trains to be manufactured locally in South Africa to support domestic skills development and job creation.
