Gaza agricultural sector faces severe destruction and supply shortages

The agricultural sector in Gaza is facing severe devastation due to the destruction of farmland, loss of crops, and a critical shortage of essential supplies such as fertilizers and pesticides. These challenges are undermining the livelihoods of farmers and threatening regional food security.

Individual efforts to maintain production are emerging despite the conflict. For instance, Mahmoud Sikkik, who lost both legs during the war, is attempting to establish a small gardening business to support his family. Additionally, grape growers have suffered significant losses due to land clearance and the destruction of vines.

Ahed Zanabit, director of the Palestinian Agricultural Relief office, stated that the organization has implemented approximately 100 small-scale agricultural initiatives in Gaza to help families regain productive capacity. However, major obstacles remain, including a lack of funding, difficulty reaching beneficiaries, and the high cost of agricultural inputs. The organization is also working to support the olive harvest in the West Bank through its ‘We Are With You’ campaign.
