Gaza crisis: health, reconstruction and agriculture collapse

Overview

More than 1,000 days after the October 2025 cease‑fire, Gaza remains in acute humanitarian collapse. Cumulative casualties have risen to at least 73,221 dead and 173,643 injured; children now number 21,730 killed, 45,113 wounded and 59,054 orphaned. All 40 hospitals and 158 primary health centres have been hit, leaving only a handful partially functional and resulting in the death or detention of over 1,700 medical workers. About 70 % of the ambulance fleet is out of service; spare parts, tires, batteries and diesel remain blocked. crews at Nusayrat camp cannibalise parts to keep a few vehicles running, while the Ministry of Health says the death toll has risen by another 1,100 and injuries by 3,546 since the cease‑fire. Humanitarian relief has intensified, with more than 65,000 Egyptian Red Crescent volunteers organizing food, medical and fuel convoys through Rafah. Yet living conditions are dire: residents shelter in tents amid open sewers, face rat infestations and lack basic water‑sanitation services. Only roughly thirty medical facilities operate at reduced capacity, and schools are largely non‑functional, though plans are under way to rebuild a secondary‑level school. Agriculture, fisheries and livestock remain devastated, with 85 % of farmland destroyed and an estimated $3.49 billion loss. Movement restrictions continue to hamper any revival of food production. The FAO warns Gaza is still in the emergency phase of food insecurity (IPC Phase 4); no famine is officially declared, but 1.6 million people are projected to stay in crisis through April 2026. By October 2026, more than 101 000 children under five will need treatment for acute malnutrition (31 000 severe) and about 37 000 pregnant or lactating women will require nutritional assistance.
