Gaza ceasefire efforts face diplomatic and military hurdles

Nickolay Mladenov, the Board of Peace high representative, has criticized Israel’s ongoing military strikes in Gaza, stating they hinder the transition to civilian administration and the implementation of a U.S.-led ceasefire framework. Mladenov told the U.N. Security Council that while Hamas has reportedly accepted core requirements to relinquish arms and cede governance, continued bombardments prevent residents from feeling a genuine end to hostilities.

Simultaneously, Israel is reportedly considering the expulsion of personnel from the United Kingdom, Germany, and Italy from the International Gaza Support Center (IGSC), a U.S.-led body established to monitor the ceasefire. While the Italian government has dismissed the possibility of such an expulsion, analysts suggest the move could signal increasing diplomatic isolation for Israel and strained relations with Western allies.

Israeli officials maintain that military operations will continue until Hamas fully surrenders its arsenal. In recent discussions involving Benjamin Netanyahu and Jared Kushner, technical work has reportedly continued on the 20-point framework, though disagreements remain regarding the conditions for total disarmament and the presence of military forces.
