Gaza war kills 265 journalists, dozens more injured and displaced

Since Israel began its offensive on Gaza on 8 October 2023, the conflict has killed 265 journalists, according to the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, with the Gaza Media Office reporting a similar figure of 262 and three missing. About 500 journalists have been injured and more than 34 detained.

The war has devastated Gaza's press infrastructure: 60‑75 % of journalists have lost their homes, roughly 700‑900 are now homeless, and over 80 % of media offices have been destroyed. Reporters now work from tents, shelters and public spaces, relying on mobile phones amid frequent power and internet outages.

High‑profile attacks have claimed journalists’ lives, including the bombing of Nasser Hospital on 25 August 2025, which killed five reporters, and an airstrike on 10 August 2025 near Al‑Shifa Hospital that killed Al Jazeera correspondents Anas al‑Sharif and Muhammad Qariqa. The broader war has caused roughly 73 000 Palestinian deaths and 173 000 injuries, underscoring the extreme risks faced by those documenting the crisis.
