Gaza Conflict Leaves Over 58,000 Children Orphaned

Since the Israeli offensive that began on 7 October 2023, more than 58,000 children in Gaza have lost one or both parents, according to UNICEF. The agency estimates that almost 59,000 children have lost a parent and about 2,700 are now full orphans. Over 73,000 people have been confirmed dead in Gaza, deepening the humanitarian crisis.

The loss of parental care is driving severe psychological distress, increased vulnerability to exploitation, and disruption of education. UNICEF and the World Health Organization have warned that affected children face long‑term anxiety, depression, and social difficulties. Aid groups are calling for coordinated international assistance, including food, shelter, safe spaces, and mental‑health services.

Personal accounts illustrate the impact: Mahmud Nofal, a 64‑year‑old caretaker, now looks after his three‑ and five‑year‑old grandchildren in a tent at Khan Junis, while Rasan Schanan, who survived a six‑storey building collapse, describes lingering fear and reliance on family photographs for comfort. Ola Awad, president of the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, said, “The tragedy does not only involve physical injuries; it reaches the foundation of families and social structure.”
