UNICEF child humanitarian crises in Gaza and Ukraine

Overview

UNICEF’s warning in early July 2026 that air strikes had pushed children in Gaza into inhumane conditions was reinforced by a late‑July update. Approximately 1.9 million of Gaza’s 2.1 million residents remain displaced, with water supplies critically low – up to 70 % of the population now receives less than six litres a day, heightening risks of dehydration, disease and malnutrition among children. Only 44 % of planned humanitarian deliveries reached the enclave during May‑June, leaving essential health and nutrition services far short of needs.

In Ukraine, a Russian strike on a UNICEF warehouse in Bilohorodka near Kyiv destroyed more than 106 000 aid items worth about $3.9 million, including generators, drinking‑water containers and hygiene kits. Child casualties have risen, with at least two children killed and over 50 injured in recent weeks, marking the highest monthly child‑fatality count since 2022.

Amid these worsening child‑focused emergencies, UN Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres warned that, despite a ceasefire in Gaza, civilians continue to be killed in their homes and during daily activities, and humanitarian conditions remain intolerable. He called for immediate protection of civilians and a durable solution to end the suffering.
