Gaza death toll exceeds 73,000 as humanitarian crisis deepens

The health ministry in Gaza reports that the death toll since the October 2023 Israeli offensive has risen to 73,090, with 173,553 people injured. In the latest 48‑hour period, 16 bodies and 16 injured individuals were brought to hospitals, some of whom were rescued from rubble after local attacks.

The conflict has displaced about 1.9 million residents—roughly 90 % of the enclave’s population—and destroyed more than 90 % of infrastructure, including over 410,000 homes and 284 schools. Around 94 % of health facilities have been damaged, leaving only a handful of partially functional hospitals that lack power, fuel, and medical supplies.

Civilian casualties are heavily weighted toward vulnerable groups: more than 21,500 children and 12,500 women have been killed, and 2,700 families were completely exterminated. At least 7,500 people remain missing, and thousands of bodies are still unrecovered beneath the debris.

The humanitarian situation has worsened with severe shortages of food, clean water, and medicines. Reports describe infestations of rats and weasels, outbreaks of skin infections in overcrowded camps, and contamination of water sources due to destroyed sewage systems. These conditions are fueling a looming public‑health disaster amid an already crippled medical system.
