Gaza displaced face severe risks as winter approaches
As winter approaches, hundreds of thousands of displaced people in the Gaza Strip face severe humanitarian risks due to damaged infrastructure and inadequate shelter. Many families are living in torn, worn-out tents that offer little protection against wind and rain. Displaced residents report using sandbags in a desperate attempt to prevent rainwater from flooding their living spaces.
The Ministry of Public Works and Housing has warned that over 2,000 buildings in the Gaza Strip are damaged and at risk of collapse, posing a direct threat to residents who have no alternative housing. In Gaza City, damaged drainage and sewage networks increase the risk of streets turning into pools of water.
A technical assessment by the Shelter Cluster in Palestine revealed that many tents provided to displaced persons are unsuitable for harsh winter conditions due to poor materials, lack of waterproofing, and design flaws that allow water to collect on roofs. Residents in areas such as North Nuseirat, Khan Younis, and Deir al-Balah have expressed urgent needs for winter supplies, including waterproof covers, blankets, and warm clothing, to avoid the threat of exposure.
