Gaza displacement camps face extreme heat crisis

More than 1.5 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are facing a severe humanitarian crisis as extreme summer heat intensifies the hardships of displacement. Temperatures inside nylon tents are reportedly reaching 50 degrees Celsius, creating what has been described as ‘human ovens.’

The extreme heat is compounding the existing effects of conflict, leading to increased risks of dehydration, heatstroke, and various skin and respiratory issues. Vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and those with chronic conditions like diabetes or heart disease, are at the highest risk. The crisis is exacerbated by a lack of electricity for cooling, insufficient access to clean drinking water, and the inability to properly store essential medications.

Urgent needs identified include the provision of climate-appropriate tents, solar-powered cooling solutions, increased potable water supplies, and mobile medical teams to treat heat-related illnesses.
