Gaza doctor detained without medication and new civilian administration face Israeli blockades

Dr Marwan al‑Hams, director of a Palestinian field hospital in Gaza, has been held by Israeli forces since February 2026. The Center for the Defense of Palestinian Prisoners says he has been denied essential heart medication, lost about 20 kg, and is at serious risk of death, prompting calls for urgent international medical and human‑rights intervention.

At the same time, the UN‑backed National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG) was created in January 2026 under UN Security Council resolution 2803 and a US‑led 20‑point peace plan to take over civil administration after Hamas dissolved its government. Led by technocrats such as Acting Commissioner Ali Abdel Hamid Shaath, the committee is based in Cairo because Israel has blocked its members from entering Gaza, limiting its ability to assume authority.
