Gaza faces acute food insecurity amid aid cuts and supply disruptions

Children in the Gaza Strip are facing severe malnutrition due to rising food prices, scarcity of goods, and significant reductions in humanitarian assistance. The World Food Programme (WFP) announced on October 19 that funding shortages have forced a reduction in aid recipients, dropping from 1.6 million in September to 1.1 million in October. Additionally, food rations have been halved, and the daily provision of ready-to-eat meals has decreased from 250,000 to 150,000 portions.

Approximately 1.4 million residents in Gaza are estimated to face acute food insecurity at crisis levels or worse. The situation is further complicated by disruptions in commercial goods. Israel suspended commercial shipments to Gaza on October 14 following disputes over payment demands for truck deliveries, though reports indicate a gradual resumption of these shipments.

Economic experts warn that because approximately 95 percent of families in Gaza depend on aid, these cuts directly impact local market demand and consumption. The reduction in support threatens to widen the gap between basic needs and available resources for families who have lost income due to ongoing conflict and destroyed economic infrastructure.
