Gaza faces escalating humanitarian crisis amid goods suspension and winter risks
The Gaza Strip faces escalating humanitarian challenges as the conflict enters its fourth year. COGAT, the Israeli military body overseeing humanitarian affairs, has announced the suspension of commercial goods entering the territory. While COGAT claimed the decision was made by local merchants due to Hamas taxation, Gaza’s private truckers union disputed this, stating Israel made the decision. Humanitarian groups, including the Norwegian Refugee Council, warned that the loss of commercial markets alongside aid could severely impact food affordability and supply.
The fishing sector has also been heavily impacted. Zakaria Bakr, coordinator of the Palestinian fishermen’s committees, reported that 235 fishermen have been killed and 143 injured by Israeli fire. Additionally, 1,810 fishing boats have been destroyed or damaged, crippling a vital source of food and economic security for thousands of families.
As winter approaches, health risks are mounting. Approximately 84% of the population, or over 1.76 million people, live in overcrowded displacement camps or inadequate shelters. International organizations, including UNICEF, have warned that the combination of malnutrition, contaminated water, and poor sanitation increases the risk of hypothermia, respiratory infections, and waterborne diseases, particularly among children.
