Gaza faces rising destruction and severe childhood trauma

The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip continues to deteriorate, impacting both the physical infrastructure and the psychological well-being of the population. According to Save the Children, an estimated 105,000 to 110,000 children have been born in Gaza during the ongoing conflict, facing extreme conditions including starvation, displacement, and limited medical care.

Psychological experts, including Damiano Rizzi of Fondazione Soleterre, note that the war is causing profound trauma that affects emotional regulation and communication among children. Furthermore, restrictions on the entry of goods have included toys, potentially depriving a new generation of basic childhood experiences.

On the physical landscape, a UN Satellite Centre assessment indicates that the number of destroyed structures in Gaza has increased by approximately nine percent since the October 2025 ceasefire. Civilians also face persistent threats from unexploded ordnance. While mine action partners are conducting assessments and awareness sessions, they continue to face challenges regarding permissions and equipment needed to safely remove explosive hazards.
