Gaza faces world's most severe economic crisis, UNCTAD warns
The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has reported that the Gaza Strip is experiencing the most severe economic crisis ever recorded globally. According to UNCTAD acting Secretary-General Pedro Manuel Moreno, the territory's economy has collapsed, destroying decades of development.
Key economic indicators show that Gaza's GDP per capita has fallen to 58 cents per person per day, an 83% decrease from 2022 levels. Simultaneously, price levels have surged by 274% compared to 2022. The housing sector has sustained an estimated 19 billion dollars in damages as of 2025, while industrial and agricultural production have both plummeted by 94%.
Mutasim Elagraa, UNCTAD's coordinator for Palestinian assistance, noted that while two out of three residents lived in poverty prior to October 2023, the entire population is now affected. Only 1.5% of arable land remains accessible, creating a total dependency on humanitarian food aid.
Separately, Jean-François Corty, president of Médecins du Monde, warned that the humanitarian situation in Gaza meets the definition of genocide. He highlighted the degradation of healthcare, noting that most health centers are closed or only operating one day per week, and reported that approximately 60% to 66% of Gaza is currently occupied by the Israeli military.
