Gaza humanitarian crisis intensifies amid winter and resource shortages

The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is deteriorating as winter approaches, with approximately two million people requiring shelter assistance. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports that funding shortages and disrupted supply chains through Jordan, Egypt, and Israel are hindering efforts to provide adequate housing. Many displaced families are currently using makeshift shelters, such as tents or sand-filled flour sacks, to protect themselves from rain.

Child welfare remains a critical concern. UNICEF reports that over 340 children have been killed in Gaza since the ceasefire announcement over a year ago, and approximately 60,000 children have lost one or both parents. Additionally, the Palestinian Prisoners Society states that Israel has arrested more than 2,000 Palestinian children since the conflict began, with at least 350 still held in detention.

Basic services are also under extreme strain. Water scarcity is acute, with residents reportedly accessing only half of the UN-recommended minimum daily water supply due to destroyed infrastructure and restricted access to materials. The lack of sanitation and clean water continues to pose significant health risks to the population.
