Gaza medical oxygen system nears collapse amid severe shortages
The medical oxygen system in the Gaza Strip is nearing total collapse due to severe shortages of production capacity, spare parts, and fuel. The Gaza Health Ministry reports that only 12 of the 34 oxygen production stations remain operational. Furthermore, only four out of 30 cylinder-filling machines are currently functional, and engineering teams lack the resources required for emergency maintenance.
At the Al-Shifa Medical Complex, the situation is particularly critical. The facility’s oxygen station capacity has dropped from ten stations to just two. The lack of functional equipment threatens life-saving departments, including neonatal intensive care, operating rooms, and kidney dialysis units.
The healthcare infrastructure faces broader systemic failure. More than 50% of medical equipment in hospitals has been destroyed, with significant losses reported in intensive care and kidney disease sectors. Additionally, the scarcity of fuel and motor oil—which has seen prices rise approximately 20-fold—is hindering the operation of hospital generators and the maintenance of essential machinery.
